A couple of months ago, I was excitedly talking to my art teacher about \u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pysanka\"\u003Epysanky\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E, in which eggshells are decorated with bright dyes using a wax-resist technique. This made her remember a project that she did in art school: batik. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThose of you who frequent fabric stores might recognize that word. The really pretty, brilliantly colored fabrics with intricate designs at around $15 a yard? Yup. Those are imitation batik fabrics. Traditional batik is even more expensive because of the ardourous handmade process. A swath of fabric is dyed in a light color, and then beeswax designs are drawn onto the fabric by hand to \"lock in\" the light color. The fabric is then dipped in a darker color and waxed again, and the process is repeated many times before the dye is allowed to set and the beeswax is removed. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nJust as\u0026nbsp;I made\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/shealynns-faerie-shoppe.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/sharpie-easter-eggs.html\"\u003E Sharpie Easter eggs\u003C\/a\u003E because I didn't have the tools for pysanky, we figured out how to \"cheat\" at batik using crayons! (It's not an original idea-- I had seen it done once before on a blog called \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/suzyssitcom.com\/2011\/04\/feature-friday-making-batik-fabric-with-crayons.html\"\u003ESuzy's Artsy-Craftsy Sitcom\u003C\/a\u003E).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThis is definitely a do-and-learn project. If you attempt it and have any tips for me, please share!\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: large;\"\u003EDIY Crayon Batik\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cblockquote\u003E\n\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Cstrong\u003ESupplies\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\nCrayons \u003Cem\u003E(the perfect way to use up that old box of broken crayons-- my family had two shoeboxes full, but we only used half a box in art class, shared between six or seven batik projects)\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nMuffin pan \u003Cem\u003E(mini muffin pan recommended for lots of colors\/mixing)\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nHeating tray or oven\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nWhite cotton fabric\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nCold water dye \u003Cem\u003E(hot water will melt the wax)\u003C\/em\u003E and gloves\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nCheapie paintbrushes\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nIron\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nNewspaper\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nNow, the whole idea is that you paint the crayon wax onto the material, crumple it, spray the black dye into the cracks in the wax, and iron the wax off the material. Melt them on a heating tray (or in the oven-- beware that they will cool quickly in that case). We ruined our first attempts because crayon cools quickly and cool wax just sits on top of the fabric. What with all the folding, there was no where for tape to go! Obviously I can't damage the walls or the paint, so it took a bit of thinking to find a solution.\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cdiv style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003E\nI wound up putting half pieces of 3M wall stickies on the wall. On top of these I used some really thick, puffy glue dots. Next, I pressed the paper fans onto the glue dots.
