proud of. Making these copper components was one of the most complicated jewelry-making processes I've ever attempted. This was also my first first non-class project with a jeweler's saw (I took a Metals 1 course last semester, which I will be blogging about in two or three days!). I'm not particularly proud of that; my sawing technique needs a lot of help.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThe bench pin I am working at is made out of pine. I simply cut out a v-notch and clamped it to my workbench. The yellow and black thing you see on the right of the picture is beeswax. (For those who don't get the reference, \"OKAY\" is an important line in \u003Ci\u003EThe Fault in Our Stars \u003C\/i\u003Eby John Green. The movie just came out and, of course, my cheeks turned into rivers and the shoulders of my tshirt into overtaxed sponges. After soaking the copper in the acid bath I neutralized it in a solution of baking soda and warm water. To be on the safe side, after that, I dusted pure baking soda onto the dried-off copper and rinsed it off.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-zG7GtwE5e2M\/U5vRrMHCfYI\/AAAAAAAAHKI\/Gs09TAyIEcg\/s1600\/IMGP7793.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-zG7GtwE5e2M\/U5vRrMHCfYI\/AAAAAAAAHKI\/Gs09TAyIEcg\/s1600\/IMGP7793.JPG\" height=\"424\" width=\"640\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nCopper looks like this after etching. It's not much until you attack it with steel wool.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-y5kGwpvCRKQ\/U5vRnovmH8I\/AAAAAAAAHJ4\/b8KyuyBxt2E\/s1600\/IMGP7791.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-y5kGwpvCRKQ\/U5vRnovmH8I\/AAAAAAAAHJ4\/b8KyuyBxt2E\/s1600\/IMGP7791.JPG\" height=\"424\" width=\"640\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cb\u003EYou can't imagined out relieved and excited I was that this actually worked well!\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cb\u003EThe raised designs weren't very obvious, so the next step was oxidizing the metal!\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nI used my metal\/leather hole puncher to punch the pieces (so I could string them on thin copper wire so \u0026nbsp;they wouldn't be so difficult to remove from the acid bath-- I learned that the hard way with the ferric chloride) and, wearing gloves, thoroughly scrubbed the pieces to remove debris and fingerprint oils.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n(Fixing a the broken schnozzel for my hole puncher wasn't fun. I mostly bring this up because I love the word schnozzel. \u003Ci\u003ESCHNOZZEL\u003C\/i\u003E.)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-OWUO0Eou8h4\/U5vRrs07beI\/AAAAAAAAHKM\/Pmklzje79Jk\/s1600\/IMGP7795.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-OWUO0Eou8h4\/U5vRrs07beI\/AAAAAAAAHKM\/Pmklzje79Jk\/s1600\/IMGP7795.JPG\" height=\"424\" width=\"640\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nThen I prepared a Liver of Sulfur bath. This stuff smells like... well, sulfur. The rotten-egg variety of sulfur scent, to be more accurate. BLECH.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-4xSGGjAJYVg\/U5vRsfFZcjI\/AAAAAAAAHKY\/Aw3Yk5GAFSo\/s1600\/IMGP7796.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-4xSGGjAJYVg\/U5vRsfFZcjI\/AAAAAAAAHKY\/Aw3Yk5GAFSo\/s1600\/IMGP7796.JPG\" height=\"426\" width=\"640\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nAfter neutralizing and cleaning, the copper is basically just black. Then I begin the process of very gently brushing with steel wool and polishing with three different grades of sandpaper. After a while, the raised designs are shiny and the recesses are dark brown or black (depending on how long I had them in the LOS).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-N5JS4bYEtQ4\/U5vRuDeUOHI\/AAAAAAAAHKg\/_MWbCFgw98Q\/s1600\/IMGP7801.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-N5JS4bYEtQ4\/U5vRuDeUOHI\/AAAAAAAAHKg\/_MWbCFgw98Q\/s1600\/IMGP7801.JPG\" height=\"424\" width=\"640\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cb\u003ENext, I filed and then sanded the edges.\u003C\/b\u003E Sawing metal can create lots of nicks. You definitely don't want them catching on your skin, so I file every single edge. The sanding is to create a smooth, even shine on the surface of the copper.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-snBLpdUK27M\/U5vRucM6grI\/AAAAAAAAHKk\/DJbC1aVaPJI\/s1600\/IMGP7802.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"\u003E\u003Cimg border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-snBLpdUK27M\/U5vRucM6grI\/AAAAAAAAHKk\/DJbC1aVaPJI\/s1600\/IMGP7802.JPG\" height=\"426\" width=\"640\" \/\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nSome of the pieces required more sawing at this point. The Celtic trinity knot was saw pierced, a process that lets me meticulously cut shapes out of the inside of a metal design. The new edges were filed and sanded, too.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nI then used a spray called ProtectaClear (a body-salt resistant resin) to seal the oxidation and ensure that the nice polished raised designs won't naturally oxidize over time.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n(Raw copper pieces-- like all of the copper wireworking I've done in the past-- naturally reacts with oxygen and turns dark brown over several months. A gently scrub with vinegar brings back the fresh, shiny copper).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nOne of the best things about the spray is that is keeps your skin from turning green! The greenness is not actually an allergic reaction, as I was taught growing up. It actually is a chemical reaction very akin to oxidation (the reason that pennies turn brown then green) and is just a buildup of molecules that washes right off the skin with soap. It's never a fun thing to deal with, though, which is why I am so fond of this spray. It's nontoxic, don't worry. :)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/--1PssYnzEGw\/U50vVW3IUsI\/AAAAAAAAHK8\/MPUf-K2Wq04\/s1600\/IMGP7804.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; What is a destroyable book? Something like a Reader's Digest Abriged book, which has a beautiful cover but it generally rubbish inside.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cb\u003EDo NOT destroy good books. We chose a rectangle with rounded corners. Be sure to leave at least a half-inch border around the design.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nIt's difficult to twist a scrollsaw to make sharp edges, and even the curves we worked with were sideloading the blade. If you would like to make a straight rectangle, I'd recommend drilling holes at each corner. This will make your box sturdy but let it look like a very normal book from the outside.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n(This is different from the technique that I did with my previous book boxes, when I glued the outsides of the pages shut. I was really pleased with how it turned out, especially considering the complexity of the design! For this tutorial I made a very basic heart stamp. Remember, your image will be reversed when stamping. For the heart it doesn't matter, but for the monogram I freehanded a mirror image. Begin by simply using the smallest tip to slowly, slowly trace the design. After the initial burn, press down the the tool (it's best if you do this using the side of the tool, not just the tip) to deepen the valleys. It needs to be deep enough for the wax design to stand out clearly. Do your best to not just push a bunch of dots into the wood, as this will make the final design very bumpy.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nProtip: If your design starts getting really bumpy, use a small flathead screwdriver to push the bumpy wood down flat. You want everything to be level-- unless you want a design with varying heights, such as my monogram, where I carved the main letter deeply but made the swirlies much lighter.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nAlso, if your wooden block is covered with paint like mine, and it smells \u003Ci\u003Ereally\u003C\/i\u003E\u0026nbsp;foul while burning it, you can always put on a mask. The design needs to be sanded to make it flat and even. If you sand it well enough, the wax will not stick to the wood. The design is finished, and all that remains is to dip the tip in oil and wipe off the excess (to discourage the wax from sticking to your stamp). Their pieces were reasonably priced and just lookit that beautiful packaging!\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EI'm not really an expert on stamping with wax, as the first time I did it was when I made the monogram stamp, but here's a couple of tips:\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E1. Don't catch the paper on fire if you are using a wax stick with a wick. Do, however, get really excited that you are holding a flame and dripping really really really hot wax on paper. It's cool.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E2. Let the wax dry for just a couple of seconds before imprinting it with the stamp.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E3. Let the wax dry with the stamp ontop of it, then wiggle the stamp off.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E4. If you are going to mail this, use modern plastic waxes that won't break in the mail. I used beeswax, which is great for historical accuracy. However, historically seals were used not only as a sort of signature but also to keep prying eyes off of letters. If a seal was fiddled with, it would crack. I think that beeswax probably won't survive modern mail machines.
